UNESCO Office for Iraq

In the framework of the Iraqi Public Sector Modernization program, UNESCO office in Iraq organized a workshop from 23 to 25 June 2013 in the Royal Tulip Hotel in Baghdad under the title "Best Practices in Education Reform".

During this three-day workshop international UNESCO experts introduced Iraqi officials to best regional and international practices in the field of strategic planning, management, and assessment of institutions in technical and vocational education.

 
The workshop was marked by a high level official presence as Director of the Prime minister Office Dr. Hamed Al-Ahmad, university deans and directors, in addition to consultants, teachers and academic staff from the ministries of Education, and higher education and scientific research attended this workshop.   
Representing UNESCO, Education Program manager Dr. Nabil Naccache praised the efforts made by the Iraqi ministries so far, confirming that "UNESCO will continue to support the Iraqi ministries through updating Iraqi experts and officials and introducing them to the most recent trends and practices in the field of education, for them to pick the best and most suitable of these practices for the ambitions of the Iraqi society".
Furthermore, the director of the International Institute of Education Planning (IIEP), Dr. Khalil Mahshi, discussed the activities that will be carried out by the Institute to enhance management at the ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and identify the training needs within the ministry.

This workshop marks the actual start of the implementation of the action plan set to achieve a comprehensive reform of the education sector upon the priorities identified in the National Education Strategy launched by the government at the end of 2012. Accordingly, national teams were formed to participate in cooperation with UNESCO in achieving the modernization process to improve the quality of education in Iraq.
